Track & field
- U11's
Training notice - Thursday night training for the U11's will take place at North Bridge Leisure Centre from 6pm till 7pm, in the Ancillary Hall, from 4th October to early March 08. Cost is £1 per session or free with the track pass. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP REVIEW A couple who have been competing on a regular basis are Dan Beadsley and Hannah Walker, the winners of the boys and girls competitions respectively. Both were successful in three of their four events, Dan meeting with defeat in just the shot putt and Hannah’s only defeat coming in the 600m. Both have enjoyed really successful seasons and a lot of the up-and-coming Under 11's will doubtless be relieved when they move up to a higher age-group in 2008. The girl’s 600m was won in determined fashion by Caroline Johnson (third overall), who showed plenty of guts when kicking for home before the bend. This was just Caroline’s second 600m race and she’s still got plenty of untapped potential at longer distances. William Bates had even less experience of the shot putt, but it didn’t prevent him winning the boy’s competition with a throw of 5.59 – he’ll be an interesting one for the other throwing events at Under 13 level next year. Splitting Hannah and Caroline in the girl’s competition was Scarlett Lake, who picked up points in each of the four events and was runner-up in both the long jump and shot putt. Hopefully, Scarlett will gain confidence from this and compete for the Harriers at Under 13 level next year. Scarlett’s brother Cameron occupied third place in the boy’s competition, also managing to score in each of the four events, though arguably his best effort was when jumping 3.29 to finish second in his first ever long jump. Four points ahead of Cameron was Patrick Hellowell, who finished no worse than fourth in any event and managed second place in both the 75m and shot putt. Finally, congratulations again to all those (including parents) who helped make the event a success and, remember, Presentation Night will be held at the Old Broaleians Rugby Club on Friday 19th October (from 6pm). Further details will follow, but there won’t just be prizes for those who were successful at the Club Championships! West Yorkshire Track & Field Championships, Cleckheaton Sept 1st 2007 The Harriers were represented in the Under 11 section by Dan and Joe Beadsley in the boys competition and by Hannah Walker, Emma Sutcliffe and Georgia White in the girls competition. The outstanding performance was achieved by Dan in the 75m, winning the gold medal in a time of 10.6 secs and breaking the Championship record into the bargain. He also landed the 600m in gutsy fashion and managed to pick up a bronze in the long jump despite a number of fouls. His brother Joe produced a noteworthy performance for an eight-year-old in reaching the 75m final, an effort which augurs well for his prospects in the same age-group over the next couple of years. Hannah found one too good in each of the three events she entered, running solid races in both the 75m and 600m before producing a personal best by some way to pick up another silver in the long jump, her best of 3.86m an excellent jump which would have been good enough to win the boys event. Georgia ran well to finish fifth in the 600m, an event in which she has improved throughout the year, whilst Emma finished eighth in the same event and bettered that position by one place in the shot putt. Thanks to Simon Walker for all the U11 information
