Young Athletes League 2009 - Match 1 report

Halifax Harriers young athletes made the perfect start to their league campaign by winning their opening match in the first round at the Spring Hall Track, a ground that is also shared by Holmfirth Harriers, who were the host club on this occasion. St Helens Sutton AC and Lancaster & Morecambe AC took up the two other places in this four-team match.


In the U17 men's section Patrick Costello was 2nd in both 100 & 200m. His time of 12.2 for the 100m ranked as a G4. He also jumped 5.26m for a G4 in the long jump. Chris Gladwyn was 2nd in the 100m(B) and first in both the (B) long jump and 1500m steeplechase, whilst Callum Hanson was 2nd in the 200m(B) and 1st in the (B) shot. Sam Kerfoot-Roberts was 2nd in the 400m and went on to win his 1500m in 04:24.1 for a G3 in a hard fought race against close rival Max Kaye from Holmfirth. He also picked up a handy G4 in the triple jump, 10.85m. Chris Sage similarly doubled up in the 800m and the 1500m steeplechase, finishing first in both a collecting a G4 in the 800m in 02:07.00. Kieron Royston won the 800m(B) in 02:14.00 and the high jump. Gareth Burrell and Josh Nuttall were 2nd and 1st in their respective 3000m races, with Josh picking up extra points for his 1st in the (B) javelin. Jack Mosley was the star in the field winning all of his three events, javelin, discus and shot for maximum points. Cieron Nieuwstad was the final scorer in the (B) discus.


In the U15's Miles Dean won the 100m(A) in 12.80 for a G4. Saul Rigg won both the 100m(B) and 400m(A) races in 12.60 and 58.90 both for a G4 finishing with 2nd in the long jump. Harry Mallinson ran a pleasing 25.20 for a G3 in the 200m(A). Lewis Wardle was 2nd in the 100m(B) and won the 400m(B) to help pile the points on. Jack Dighton ran a competent 800m winning in 02:25.4. Eddie Hester and Jerome Castelow dominated both the A and B 1500m races, Eddies time of 04:40.7 earning a G3 and Jerome finishing in 05:05.00 just outside last seasons PB of 05:02.8. In the field Josh Shirson threw 20.94m in the (A) discus for a G4 and was 2nd in the (B) javelin. PeterAlport won his (B) discus and was 2nd in the (A) shot. Dalton Bradley wrapped things up with 29.37m throw in the javelin for a G4.


The U13 boys were prominent in both track and field. Individually Dan Beadsley won the 100m(A) in 13.30 for a G2, was 2nd in the long jump with a leap of 4.46m also for G2 and gave a great team performance by winning the 800m(B) in 02.48.10. Jay Connor ran 14.30 in the (B) 100m and 16.00 in the 75m hurdles both for G4 and chipped in by winning the 200m(A). Cameron Lake was 1st in the 75m hurdles (B), 2nd in the (A) high jump and picked a final bonus point in the shot. Thomas Pratt was 1st in the 200m(B) and 3rd in the (B) shot. Hamish Ainsley was 1st in the (B) long jump and 3rd in the 800m just outside a G4 in 02:43.6. Luke Hartley and Michael Silvester were 2nd and 1st in their respective 1500m (A) and (B) races to complete the scoring.


In the U17's women section there were some notable successes despite a lack of numbers competing. Holly Martin completed the double in both 100 and 200m races with times of 13.9 and 25.5 seconds respectively, picking up a G1 for the latter and went onto finish 2nd in the shot putt. Beth Kerfoot-Roberts ran a respectable 47.00 for the 300m finishing in second place then went on to win her 300m hurdles in 51.0 for a G4. Lorna Gill won her 300m hurdles (B) race in 53.0 just a shade outside a G4 and again just outside the same standard in the long jump where she finished 3rd. Joelle O'Neil and Hannah Pilkington picked up maximum points by winning their 1500m races as (A) and (B) runners, with Hannah doubling up in the 3000m alongside Helen Roby again both athletes collecting a full quota of points. Hannah later went on to win the (B) long jump event. Beth Kerfoot-Roberts and Natalie Wardle both finished 2nd in their respective (A) and (B) javelin events.


The U15 girls competed strongly and deservedly achieved graded performances. Kate Wasyliw stormed home in the 100m in 12.6 and was just pipped into 2nd place in the 200m in a time of 26.4, both collecting G1. Roisin McCallion won the 100m (B) in 15.3 and was 1st in the 800m (B) in 02:35.7 for a G4, whilst Elizabeth Toole was 2nd in the 200m (B) with 34.3 and 1st in the (B) long jump. Rebecca Sullivan continues to improve and was rewarded with a G2 for her 1.5metres in the high jump, a G4 for her 02:33.5 in the (A) 800m and also won her 75m hurdles race. Fran Oddy ran a 1500m in 05:25.7 for a G4 and was 2nd in the long jump. Fran was supported by Molly Jagger in the 1500m (B) race and finished in a time of 05:47.6. Ellie Greenwood kept Rebecca company in the high jump winning the (B) event and was 2nd in the (B) javelin. Ellie however excelled in the discus and threw 19.26m for a G3 just 26cm behind the winner. Caitlin Carolan was in good form too finishing 2nd in the (B) discus with 15.90m for a G4 and improved to a G3 in the shot with a throw of 7.98m. Elena Dodd was 2nd in the 75m hurdles (B) race and completed the field event scoring with a 3rd in the (B) shot putt.


In the U13 girls section there were no fewer than 11 graded performances from 16 combined track and field events, an outstanding achievement. Hannah Walker ran 12.3 the 75m hurdles for a G2 and 02:32.1 in the 800m for the same grade. Regan Smith ran 21.0 in the 150m for a G2 and 04:20.2 in the 1200m for a G3. Caroline Johnson ran 20.8 in the 150m(B) also for G2 and won the 1200m(A) in 04:18.2 to collect a G3. Hannah Walker went on to pick up a further G2 for her 1.35 m high jump and Scarlett Lake a G3 for her 1.30m as the (B) competitor. Scarlett also achieved a G4 in the 75m hurdles running 14.2 seconds. Molly Travis ran 02:48.4 for a G4 in the 800m(B). Newcomers Georgia Whitehouse ran 11.8 in the 75m(A) for a G4 and was 3rd in the (B) long jump, whilst Laura Chapman was narrowly outside a G4 in the 75m(B) for her 11.8 and was 2nd in the shot putt. Rosina Costello completed the scoring finishing 3rd in both (A) long jump and (A) shot again just outside the grades.


Halifax finished with their customary flourish in the relay events, winning 8 out of 9 races to complete a memorable afternoons work.


Final team scores were; 1st Halifax Harriers 426pts, 2nd Lancaster & Morecambe 328, 3rd Homfirth Harriers 167 and 4th St Helens & Sutton 159.
