Yorkshire Road Relays 2010 report by Ciaran Wilson- Baig

Molly(far right) The start Under 11 champions

I just wanted to tell you about what happened on Saturday 11th Sept 2010. It was the County Athletics Association (AA) Road Race meeting, held this year at Leeds Met University, Carnegie Campus.

In the U15 boys race, length 4300m, we had 4 runners myself (Ciaran Wilson-Baig), Max Wharton, Jerome Castelow, Eden Whitelaw. It had rained early in the morning, but was not raining at the start of our race. However, it poured down during the second lap.

The result: Max W 1st, Jerome C 2nd, me 8th, Eden W 11th. Teams: Spenborough 3rd with 24 points, Wakefield 2nd with 22, and us Halifax 1st with 11!! Eden W did well. His strong finish kept Wakefield's 3rd man below all of the Halifax boys.

We are all very proud of our medals. Bring on the Cross-countries!

Also well done to Molly Traviss (Under 13's): Coming 3rd in her first Under 13's race and the Under 17's Boys won their Relay Race. They won by at least half a lap of the track.

From Ann (Ciaran's Mum)

I was very impressed with the support from all the competitors and supporters, in particular the help and encouragement shown to all the runners during the race, helping them warm up, get ready for their race and the cool down. Several parents and coaches were also dotted about the course shouting encouragement to all the racers, not just their child. Well done to all the runners and what a start to the Winter Season!

Harriers make history by claiming county honours

Harriers make history

Three Halifax Harriers juniors – Harry Mallinson, Kate Wasyliw and Sam Kerfoot-Roberts - created another first this season by earning their full Yorkshire County vests at the recent Northern Inter-County Championships held at the Gateshead International Stadium. It is over 20 years since a Harrier track and field athlete last gained a county vest so to get three all at once was like waiting for a bus on a rainy day. It was a fantastic achievement for each athlete, and, once again, the selectors have had their eyes opened to the wonderful things achieved at the club this season which have culminated in medals being won at County, Northern County, English Schools and at National level competition.

Harry claimed top spot in his 200m with a time of 23.70. Kate was second in both her 100m and 200m with times of 12.66 and 26.35 respectively. Sam was third in his 800m finishing in a time of 2:01.62. All three athletes had to contend with extremely windy conditions which reflected slightly in their times, all having achieved faster times earlier in the year set in more favourable conditions.

All three athletes made a significant contribution towards the overall team score which ultimately gave Yorkshire top spot with 702 points, Lancashire were second with 662 points and Merseyside third with 485 points.
