London Triathlon
31st July 2011
Sporting new Tri suits, designed by Heath Reilly of the club, members of Halifax Harriers again descended on London for the world biggest Triathlon on Sunday and were motivationally spurred on by meeting Iwan Thomas MBE, current 400 metre UK record holder, on the eve of the event..
All took part in the Olympic distance event which comprised as 1500 metre swim, followed by a bike leg of 38.7 Km and a concluding run of 9.8Km First home for the club and in 16th position in his age category was Mike Aylott a member of the Harriers and also a member of Calderdale Tri Club with an impressive overall time of 2:16:00, which was less than 10 minutes behind the winner.
Next home for the Harriers and improving on last year, was Heath Reilly with a time of 2:31:30 closely followed by Helen Roby who was hoping to break 3 hours, a target which was smashed with her time of 2:33:29 and which, had she elected to race in her age category would have brought her home in bronze medal position.
Three Harriers then battled for position with Keith Midgley turning in a time of 2:40:12, Mark Gaughan followed home in 2:42:52 with Dene Townend hot on his heels in 2:43:18 a time which gave him 28th position in his age group,
The next Harrier home was experienced runner Sarah Cumber, who, on her debut, not only over the Olympic distance, but also on her first open water swim, (a daunting experience in its own right), had set a target of 4 hours to complete the event. This proved something of an overestimation and she was delighted with her finishing time of 2:52:13. The final club representative and taking part with a broken finger which hampered his progress, was Martin Haigh turning in a time of 3:12:50. Next years' event is 22nd and 23rd of September, due to the Olympics, and the date is already in the diary for many.
