Cragg Vale Fell Race

By Chris Burrell

It's not often that Halifax Harriers can field 7 runners in a fell race these days, but on a very warm sunny evening down in the pretty village of Cragg Vale, 7 Harriers lined up on the start line to take part in the Cragg Vale Fell Race.
The race starts on the steep tarmac road into the village passing the race HQ in the church, over the bridge and then taking a sharp right into the woods. Climbing steadily at first, and then up a steep section up onto the moors, taken the winding track towards Stoodley Pike. Then turning left into a small plantation, this is where the fun starts, with the wide paths turning narrow and muddy, snaking their way through the trees. Once out of the plantation the ground changed from mud to leg sapping knee deep bogs. The rough then falls steeply back in to the finish in Cragg Vale.
First back for the harriers in fifth place was Joe Crossfield in a time of 28.44 only 88 seconds behind the race winner Jack Ross from Staffordshire Moorland Athletic Club. Close on Joe's heals was Brad Traviss in 29.30, and a little bit further down the field was second Lady Molly Traviss in 36.26. Next in was Chris Burrell in 40.17, Mollie Jagger in 42.13, Sue Martin in 53.07, and Helen Smithies in 53.45.
The lads took fourth place in the team prize, with the Ladies going one place better taking third place.
Well done to all who took part, roll on next Tuesday for the Stoodley Pike Fell Race.
