Hornsea 1/3 of a windy marathon, Sunday 11th April 2010

Hello all! Well what a wonderful weekend of weather we’ve had! Some folks may have been bbq ing today with it being the warmest weekend this year… Geoff and I spent the day over in East Yorkshire to run the Hornsea 1/3 Marathon race.

We thought it sounded a bit different and a distance we’d not tried before…a bit of fun really. We had debated how we would categorise the race…and thought a short 10 miler would be better than a long 10k, seeing as we both find 10ks a bit ‘iffy’ and 10 milers a bit more, shall we say ‘palatable’ for use of a better word!

Apparently it’s an old race which was resurrected a couple of years ago (the race now reaching @ 300 entries). Hornsea Rotary club hold the race for Marie Curie Cancer Care and most of the proceeds go to the charity which is fantastic. The smiling mayor was there too to present us with medals and carry out the presentation. (Bless him)

We ended up getting right into the swing of things as it really was a very friendly event.

The race begins in a village called Great Hatfield from a local farm and the course is rather like the Hull 20/Snake Lane 10 - very open country lanes and fen like with big skies oh and wind too…in fact I think the wind is starting to follow us around…it seems to be every blooming where!

Now I would also say it was a double lapper but Geoff assures me it wasn’t, so maybe that was me going delirious with the hard work I was putting in (or the wind just confusing me, which doesn’t take much!).

The race was won by a young man called Steve Bateson of East Hull Harriers in a super duper time of 45.29. Somehow I don’t think it was very windy where he was running….

Geoff won his age category in 56.16 and yours truly won the ladies in a windswept time of 54.38.

After the presentation we set off to find the ‘Bluebell’ – a 16th century pub in Old Ellerby which we’d found in the Beer Guide.

What a great time we had…again this would be a great club race as it’s very light hearted, beautiful and given less wind, would be a fast course….

Ps bloomin wind…
