Cross country
West Yorkshire - race 4
Nunroyd park: 6 December 2009
There was a haul of medals, both team and individual, for Halifax Harriers at the final meeting of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League at Nunroyd Park.
In what can only be classed as swamp-like conditions, the runners had to plough through strength sapping mud for much of the course, which had to be re-routed due to the exceptionally wet and boggy ground.
With the under-11 girls pushing for a team medal, it was important that they have a good performance in the race.
Jasmine Walker has consistently been running strongly and she was at her best again as she led her team home in what was a tough race for the young girls.
Olivia King had a tremendous run to keep close to Jasmine, just losing ground over the final stages but her best run to date earned her 20th position.
Completing the team was Amy Cowton who finished 22nd and so helped the team to finish as bronze medallists overall in the league.
With only two boys in the under-11 race, there was no chance of a team medal but George Ainsley once again showed his strength in the race by working his way into the leading quartet and so clinch a medal for fourth place overall in the league.
There was yet another fourth place overall in the league for Molly Traviss, in the under 13 girls, and the under 13 boys saw Adam Tofiq have his first race for the club as he gamely battled round the course for a 40th place.
Again no full team for the under-15 girls but Holly Callaghan continued her return to fitness with a fine 11th place in a hard and draining race. Overall in the league Holly finished an encouraging 10th place.
Team glory though went to the under15 boys as they took team gold.
With team stalwarts Max Wharton and Jerome Castelow always up in the top 10 positions, the support from the rest of the team meant they were favourites for the title from the first race and they didn't disappoint.
The battle between Max and Jerome ensured 100 per cent effort from both boys, with Max sneaking in front in this race by mere seconds. Overall in the league, Max pipped Jerome for a medal by one point, both finishing sixth and seventh respectively.
The consistency of Hannah Pilkington paid off as she led her team of ladies to third team overall in the league, finishing in 10th place, herself.
Sam Kerfoot-Roberts found the toughness of the course to his liking as he finally clinched himself third place and a bronze medal overall in the league.
Mikie Gaughan also had another excellent run, striding over the line in seventh place, which also cemented his overall position in the league as seventh.
The rest of the team were also rewarded with silver team medals.
